About Alison
Alison Altafi is a mixed-media fiber artist based in Syracuse, New York, whose nontraditional approach to weaving centers on highly textured, circular works incorporating fiber, found materials, and embellishments.
Her work was featured in Fiber Art Now’s Emerging Artist Showcase in 2021 and has since appeared in exhibitions and publications across the globe.

With my feet grounded in a reality that feels more foreign and volatile by the day, my head and hands remain firmly stuck in the clouds. I stitch together escapism, grief, memory, fantasy and the subconscious, working to reveal soft spaces for reflection and escape—liminal spaces that exist somewhere between the familiar and the imagined.
My work builds through an accumulation of fibers, textures, found materials and embellishments into worlds that feel strangely familiar. I’m drawn to the meditative repetition of weaving in the round and to its cyclical nature: returning, remembering, unraveling, and starting over.
There is an intentional softness to my work, but softness is not the absence of weight. Grief, memory, unease, and light become tangled together, just as they do in our minds. I’m drawn to the places where beauty and discomfort overlap, where fantasy becomes a way of moving through what might otherwise become too heavy to hold.
My work offers an escape hatch into those in-between spaces—a small portal to somewhere softer, stranger, and a little more magical.
